Rejlander as Democritus

Rejlander as Democritus

Oscar Gustave Rejlander (1813 - 1875) was a swedish photographer who studied in Italy and finally settled in England.

Formerly a painter, he soon became a leading expert in photographic techniques, mastering any kind of photographic manipulation: photomontage, double exposure, combination printing and retouching were his best known abilities.

His masterpiece is an allegorical combination print called The Two Ways of Life, composed out of 32 different shots and dated 1857.

Most ancient techniques took ages to accomplish but can now be replaced by powerful digital editing tools.
