No matter which bag you'll end up with, I suggest you cast a glance to the main players in the field.

http://www.tamrac.com/

http://www.lowepro.com/

http://www.tenba.com/

http://www.tiffen.com/products.html?tablename=domke

http://www.thinktankphoto.com/

http://www.billingham.co.uk/

The list above is far from being exaustive: please use it just to have a rough idea of what is on the market. Be aware though that you can find good products anywhere.
The key point is that they should fit your own needs.
Gather all your gear and go to the shop in your town, start trying the bags you see and then come back and think over it. Use the internet extensively.
Never ever buy in haste.

There is no general rule for a good camera bag, actually.

Most of the camera bags you find around are black.
Which is probably bad.
Light colors like sand or khaki are often better: they reflect sunlight and prevent too much heating of your valuable gear.
Also, black looks so much professional: enough to attract robbers and bandits of any type. A more discrete container might be a wiser choice nine times out of ten when strolling around with precious equipment dangling from your shoulder.

Padding should be reasonably thick, rain protection should be effective, and a lot of details should be checked before buying a bag. No two bags are the same and it all depends also on your own cameras and devices, as well as on your photographic projects and attitudes: shooting at your sister's wedding hardly requires the same approach as seriously hiking in the wilderness for a week.
Your budget, also, makes a difference.

For an all-around bag I suggest you keep it cheap and buy whatever casual bag you happen to like at the nearest shop around the corner, pad it with some high density foam cut to fit, start testing with that, use it extensively, then come back here and tell us your experience.
Do not forget that next to standard shoulder camera bags there are also photographic vests, camera backpacks, holsters, beltpacks and a lot more.
We'll deal with that all once you report your experience back.

Have fun.

I am shopping for a new camera bag. Which color should I choose?
My friends say that black is the best but I am not convinced.
Also, which features make a good camera bag on the whole?
