Watermarks can be useful to protect from theft, inform about copyright data, and also expose your name or drive people to your own website.
But visible watermarks over photographs are disturbing. Really.What about the idea of adding your watermark in a framed image?
I think it is fine.As for really protecting shared images, you'd better adopt steganography.
